Snow contest returns!

Loyal web friends, we’re having the snow contest again, thanks to the generosity of Ford’s Wintergreens. Ford’s will be providing a fresh holiday wreath for the winner of the First Snowfall Prediction Contest. Here are the rules from the elusive “treeman”:

Each participant can choose a single date. The date that you select must be December 20 or earlier.
The person coming closest to the date wins. Once your date passes, you are out of the contest.
You must predict your date at least 5 days in advance of the snowfall.
The snow fall must be at least 1 inch in Bridgewater… just a skiff don’t count.

To enter your prediction, just “leave a reply” over at Bridgewater Buzz. You don’t have to have a username to enter. Just enter a comment using “guest@bridgewaterva.com” as your email. Be sure, though, to label your prediction with a screen name (no real names, please). Good luck, all, and may all your Christmases be white!

Burgess is top vote-getter

Bridgewater voters returned all three incumbent town council members to office in Tuesday’s election, with the top vote-getter being veteran council member Roscoe Burgess. Burgess tallied 1,959 votes in the initial count. Incumbent Rosetta Harris received 1, 528 votes and Bill Miracle won 1,479 votes. That left Steve Schofield not winning a seat. Hallie Dinkel continues as mayor following his unopposed reelection.

Library seeks donations

The North River Library has worked the debt resulting from its 2005 addition down to $10,000 and is now seeking donations to knock off the remaining amount. In an October letter to friends of the library, board president Kathy Marshall notes that the library had a circulation of 51,280 books in the past year. Donations may be sent to the library:

Sandy Bottom course to close Nov. 3

The Sandy Bottom par-3 golf course is set to close November 3 for the winter season. Following several months of rest and maintenance, it will reopen in the spring (date to be announced). Here is the town’s notice of the closing and more information. The course is located at the end of East College Street in Bridgewater.

Gas below $3 mark in Bridgewater

Following national and state trends, the price of gasoline in Bridgewater is again below $3 per gallon. Quarles and Bridgewater Exxon both began posting prices below $3 on the weekend of October 11-12. Area gas prices are continuously updated at the lower right of this page, courtesy of gasbuddy.com. If anyone would like to volunteer at gasbuddy.com to report in on Quarles and Bridgewater Exxon prices, those prices too will show up along with the Harrisonburg prices.

Oakwood Drive hearing set

Bridgewater Town Council will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. October 14 on the Oakwood Drive project. Here is the public hearing notice. Specifically, the hearing is to “solicit public input for Phase III of the Oakwood Drive Project funded through the VDOT Transportation Enhancement Program.”

Scouting for Food pickup set for Oct. 25

Local Scouts will be having a food drive this coming Saturday, October 25. Plastic donation bags went out over the weekend. The bags should be filled with nonperishable food and placed back on porches by 9 a.m. on Saturday. Scouting for Food locally benefits the Bridgewater Interchurch Food Pantry.

Bridgewater welcomes alumni

Bridgewater College welcomed back alumni for a busy Homecoming weekend. Below, Saturday’s Homecoming Parade drew crowds of alumni and children. Hampden-Sydney edged Bridgewater 37-34 in the Homecoming football game.

Airport Road bridge open

The Airport Road bridge at Mt. Crawford is now open again after being closed since the first week of June. This will save some of our neighbors a lot of time and mileage.
